"Our younger workers come offshore with all the issues you would see in any large random slice of population on land. It's key to provide them with ongoing care and education on heart-healthy lifestyles, information on their medications, and encouraging them to get regular check-ups and screenings."

David Taylor’s career path was paved with the thrill of saving lives in the most challenging environments. His journey began in the US Army where he honed his skills as a flight medic, navigating the skies to rescue and care for the injured. This foundation led him to the intense world of firefighting, where he faced fierce blazes and saved lives on the ground.

A new adventure on the water

Today, David works amidst the vast expanse of the ocean as an offshore paramedic in the petroleum industry. It’s a role that combines previous experiences and demands a unique set of skills in a remote and resource-limited environment. With nearly 40 years of experience under his belt, David has seen it all. "I've been a paramedic since I was 20," he said. "Now, as a remote duty paramedic, I work anywhere from 21 days to 3 months on a hitch."

From Army medic to offshore hero

David's transition to the petroleum industry had been a natural progression. He started with exploration crews, navigating the challenges of remote environments, and gradually made his way to ships, platforms, and offshore drilling units. In each setting, he provides primary and emergency care to the crews and workers, ensuring their safety and well-being in the most isolated corners of the world.

"I’m currently the 'Doc' for a crew of 150," he explained. "I see all aspects of primary care and the rare true emergency. I'm inspired by taking care of people and promoting good health and safe work and life practices."

Cutting-edge technology for better care

One of the tools that had revolutionized David's practice was the Eko CORE 500™ Digital Stethoscope. For someone who was hearing impaired, this stethoscope was nothing short of miraculous. "The amplification feature alone is a godsend," he said. "The other features are a huge asset to my practice. It enables me to hear better and do a more comprehensive assessment."

Bridging the gap with Eko technology

The Eko App recording feature allows David to share information with his physician partner on land, ensuring that every patient receives the best possible care. The ECG feature provides early clues to potential health issues, enabling David to act swiftly and decisively. "The CORE 500™ helps me deliver better patient care and have better outcomes."

Promoting heart health offshore

For David, heart health is a critical focus. "We have an aging senior management staff and our younger workers come offshore with all the issues you would see in any large random slice of population on land," he explained. "It's key to provide them with ongoing care and education on heart-healthy lifestyles, information on their medications, and encouraging them to get regular check-ups and screenings."

A legacy of care and commitment

David’s journey from the skies to the flames, and now to the waves, is a testament to his unwavering commitment to saving lives. With the aid of cutting-edge technology and his vast experience, he brings comfort, care, and hope to those who needed it most, no matter how far from home they were.
