A mission to remember
The Best Defense Foundation is committed to "taking care of those who took care of us." Dr. Misty Zelk is the medical director who oversees protocols and coordinates care for veterans, some of whom are over 100 years old. This year's Normandy trip saw 49 veterans, aged between 97 and 104, return to the historic battlefields. For many, it was a deeply emotional journey, providing a sense of closure and healing.

A heroic act on the road
The trip was not without its challenges. On June 10, as the buses carried the veterans back from a school visit — a highlight where they shared their stories with eager students — one veteran began experiencing chest pain. Dr. Zelk and her medical team sprang into action. With the aid of the Eko CORE 500™ Digital Stethoscope, they quickly assessed the situation.
Eko Health donated 13 CORE 500™s to the Foundation, ensuring that the medical team had the best tools available. This advanced stethoscope's noise cancellation and amplification features were crucial in the noisy bus environment. The team could clearly monitor the veteran’s heart sounds, administer aspirin and nitroglycerin, and ensure his blood pressure remained stable with IV fluids. The ability to perform an on-the-spot ECG provided reassurance and accuracy, ultimately stabilizing the veteran until they reached the hospital.
The power of compassionate care
This incident highlighted the seamless integration of advanced technology and compassionate care — a hallmark of Eko's mission. The CORE 500™ not only aided in a critical moment but also underscored the importance of having reliable, innovative tools in the field. Dr. Zelk and her team's swift, expert response ensured that the veteran received the best possible care, turning a potentially tragic event into a story of triumph and resilience.
Reflecting on Normandy
The Normandy trip was filled with poignant moments. The veterans received overwhelming love, gratitude, and respect from the French people and attendees from around the world. These interactions were healing, offering a sense of peace and recognition for their sacrifices.
The journey back to these historic sites allowed the veterans to witness the positive impact of their efforts, fostering a powerful sense of closure and healing. One particularly moving story was that of George Mullins, who revisited the very church where he sought refuge during the war. Walking around the area, he was able to pinpoint the exact location of his foxhole, bringing his memories into sharp focus. Witnessing this moment of clarity and reflection was profoundly moving for everyone present.
Continuing the mission
As BDF looks ahead, plans are already underway for future programs, including a significant anniversary celebration for Market Garden in Holland. The Foundation continues to seek volunteers, contributions, and referrals to support more veterans in experiencing these transformative journeys.
Eko is honored to support the Best Defense Foundation and its mission. By providing advanced tools like the CORE 500™ Digital Stethoscope, we empower healthcare professionals to offer exceptional care, ensuring that our heroes receive the recognition and support they deserve. Together, we celebrate the spirit of compassion, resilience, and innovation — values that drive both Eko and the Best Defense Foundation forward.
